How to Help New Parents in Your Circle

2020 new mums... You did it!

The pandemic has really made connecting with people complicated in so many ways. During the postpartum period, support is so vital. How can parents still get the support they need while staying safe and healthy.?

Here are some ways that you can help new parents in your circle.

Provide a meal

A nice warm, tasty meal is not only helpful but can bring a big smile to a tired parent’s face. It can be very low contact or contact free. The meal can be dropped off on the front step with heating instructions. Dessert is always a nice touch too! If you aren’t a cook or busy, send an electronic gift card to their favorite restaurant or a place like GrubHub.

Schedule a FaceTime hangout

I know virtual hangouts are getting old but it still helps! Talking on the phone became a thing of the past but texting just doesn’t cut it when we are in need human contact. Another option is meeting up for a coffee and distancing in your car with windows down. My best friend and I recently did this for two hours!

Send a little surprise gift

Maybe it’s a gift card for a coffee or a little bouquet of flowers delivered to their door, either way, it will bring some joy to their day!

Check in frequently

Remember to check in. Even if it is just saying ‘hello and how is it going’. New parents can feel a little forgotten and alone because all of their focus is on the new baby.

Mental health during postpartum can be impacted by feeling isolated or not being able to connect with those that you would typically call upon for support. If you are having signs of postpartum depression or anxiety, please do not hesitate to reach out for help.
